Advantages of Giving Through Ignorance Offsets
December 13, 2007 New York Times Article
Today the New York Times ran a front page article titled Charity's Share From Shopping Raises Concern". The Article says "They [experts] point out that it is unregulated and, in most cases, unaccountable - and no one knows who, if anyone, is claiming a tax deduction for it." The article goes on to say that "Experts say that such loose arrangements mean that donors cannot be sure where their money is going.
We have tried to confront these problems at ignorance offsets. To make sure that you know exactly how much of your donation goes to the charity of your choice we forward the donation to the charity and keep only the shipping and handling charge to cover our expenses. I hope eventually to put all three of my kids through college on the handling charge, but just in case I have a day job.
To make sure you know where your money is going we allow you to choose a charity from a list, or to input the name of any 501(c)(3) for your donation. We provide the charity with the date, time, and amount of each transaction so they can test us. We will gladly assist any charity's CPA with access to our records.
To make sure that you can keep the tax deduction we will request that the charity send you a tax receipt.
Why Ignorance?
We all know that education is key to our future and the future of our planet. Unfortunately, education is perpetually underfunded. Ignorance does a huge amount of harm to our planet. When you see ignorance, why not offset it.
